"Something Real (?)" (Solo Display)

Artists: Leung, Hiu Ling
Date: 1 - 19 June, 2020
Venue: New Asia College Ch'ien Mu Library
Statement:
To a relationship living in my dreams and reality,

The uncertainty of reality, the gaps and errors of memory, the power of dreams, and my hope to escape, push me to think about what is real. Evidence, memories in people, or what we can feel? In the days we do not know what is real, what can we believe in, what can stay?

Leung Hiu Ling was born in Hong Kong and studies Fine Arts in CUHK. She is interested in dreams and reality, fantasy and psychology, they always appeared in her art. She observes the world in a detached way, looking while keeping distance, because she thinks the distance between people, the world and herself, is the way to understand herself and others. Recording dreams is her habit to observe her own inner status in this reality as well as to escape and find another reality. Her works try to describe her own reality.

"Harsh Heat" and "As Tantalus Quenches His Thirst" (Duo Solo Display)

Artists: Lo Wing Tao and Tam Man Ching
Date: 20 - 24 January, 2020 and 18 - 29 May, 2020
Venue: New Asia College Ch'ien Mu Library
Statement:
"Harsh Heat" — I have learnt at a young age that Water Ghosts are the most ferocious. If I were to become a ghost amidst the vast Summer sea, I would probably, in days reeking of sweat, slam heads against walls with brute force, sing hymns in Japanese at the top of lungs, sanitize wounds with brute force, murmur prayers in Spanish at the top of lungs, hold “good morning” towels tight within palms with brute force, and while petting doggies with tears running down boiling cheeks, make a scene.

Lo Wing Tao (b. 1998, Hong Kong), eldest son in the family, takes interest in freestyle cooking and freestyle embroidery, and wishes to have a dog. Lo currently majors in Fine Arts in the Chinese University of Hong Kong, graduating in 2020 hopefully. Shifting among installation, western painting and poetry, Lo presents through his creative practices amplifications of vagueness and the theatrics of instinctual sentiments in a very careful manner.

"As Tantalus Quenches His Thirst" — In the Greek mythology, Tantalus enraged the gods and was punished by Zeus. He was made to stand in a deep pool of water but whenever he was thirsty and bend to drink, the water was drained. Trees dangled fruits above his head, yet whenever he tried to grasp them in his hands, the wind would toss them up towards the clouds, making him bear eternal hunger and thirst. A huge stone was also hung above him, putting him in fear forever. Maybe we could teach Tantalus Cao-cao's way. When his men were parched, he told them there were tons of plums in front of them. The soldiers drooled and hurried on straight away. Cao uplifted his whole army with simply a sentence, perhaps it could be helpful to Tantalus as well?

Tam Man Ching was born in Hong Kong in 1998. She is deeply interested in dogs, space, extraterrestrials and archaeology. Tam is currently an undergraduate student of Fine Arts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and will probably graduate in 2020. Her creative practices mainly involve mixed media and installations, examining and exploring the relationship among constructs and people with everyday objects.

"The Spirit of Chinese Ancient - Art is Still Lingering" (Solo Display)

Artist: MAK, Kit Jing Vivian
Date: 6 – 17 January, 2020
Venue: New Asia College Ch'ien Mu Library
Statement:
My paintings: Absorbing from the essence of Chinese ancient literati painting, works are developed in both meticulous and impressionistic painting ranging from ancient natural landscapes, flowers-and-birds to figures, in the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, together with paintings of Dunhuang murals from the Sixteen Kingdoms, Northern Wei, Sui and Tang, Five Dynasties, Song, Xixia and Yuan Dynasties.  My calligraphy: A creation of academic and composition. While the art of calligraphy begins with the ancient works and rubbings from calligraphers of different dynasties.  The highest art spirit of poetry, paintings and seal concludes: As the saying goes, “Good poetries deliver delicate and vivid illustrations, good paintings express poetic meaning to readers.” A seal contains the cultural legacy of thousands of years, so whenever a masterpiece is created, artists pay attention to the position of the seal, which could bring a crucial touch of enrichment to the work.

Ms. Vivian Mak has devoted herself to education for nearly 30 years. She graduated from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of the Hong Kong Baptist University and starts her teaching of Chinese language in high schools. Witnessing that most of the students’ problems were caused by broken family relationships and the lack of parent education, she completed her study in the Master of Arts in Parental Education at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2009, to further facilitate her teaching. Ms. Mak’s on-going interest in the art of Chinese calligraphy and painting has nurtured since she was young. During her college years, excellent results were achieved in the courses of Chinese paintings. After resigning from her full-time teaching recently, she is now focusing on the study of Chinese calligraphy and painting art and being grateful for the guidance of different professors from the Department of Art of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, which helps in her pursuit of the ancient Chinese art. In the journey of academic researching and calligraphy and painting creation, she aims to master the ancient style so as to accomplish a higher level of knowledge, moral and arts.

"Step by Step, Little by Little" (Solo Display)

Artist: Li Po Man, Bobo
Date: 4 - 15 November, 2019 (Extended to 6 December 2019)
Venue: New Asia College Ch'ien Mu Library
Statement:
"漸 (zim6)" with the meaning of gradually, step by step, a little by little, such as life and artwork creation are the span of cumulative process. As Feng Zikai mentioned in his article "漸 (zim6)", the essence of gradually process is time. Time, we are not able to grasp it. We always struggle in the past, get lost in the future and tangle in the reality. Mr. Feng tried to further construe the word of “gradually” with a metaphor. When we read books in the dusk, even the environment becomes darker and darker, our eyesight will finally get used to read under this unfavourable situation and we may forget about the time in the end. In this exhibition, I will try to use my artworks to record down the marks of "漸 (zim6)" in our daily life. We never need to accustom to the darkness; our belief will drive us to go further, see in the darkness and find what we truly strive for gradually.

Born and educated in Hong Kong, Bobo is an amateur urban sketcher. She has a passion for art since learning Chinese painting in her childhood. She expresses herself in life drawing every day with different kinds of medium. Bobo believes that art shouldn’t be something difficult to reach by people and should be integrated with life. Working as a HR specialist in staff training and development over 10 years, she tries to bring elements of art to her workplace.

"God, I , and the Other"

Artists: Students of Divinity School of Chung Chi College
Date: 13 March - 30 April, 2019
Venue: New Asia College Ch'ien Mu Library

Statement:
In the academy, we assume that I as a subject is distant and excluded from the marginalized other. The social constructed other sometimes is stigmatized and labeled by religions. Locating at the centre, I still have a dynamic relationship with the other, which is marginalized at the border. Suggested by post-structural and post-modern theories, both I-subject and the Other-object are in-process and destabilizing.

This exhibition of “God, I, and the Other” display a theological reflection of a group of Divinity School of Chung Chi College students studying Theology and Feminism. Their artworks reflect their understanding of the other, and the dynamic relationship among God, I, and the other. You are welcome to visit, to participate in and to imagine with us.

Four Meals a Day

Artists: Anne Wang & Virginia Fung
Date: 11 February - 1 March, 2019
Venue: New Asia College Ch'ien Mu Library
Statement:
‘Four Meals a Day’
Breakfast. We are eager to eat but are not enjoying it.
Lunch. We are busy busying so biting clouds are good enough.
Dinner. We keep shedding tears for the super spicy hotpot but we finally finish it.
Supper. We fill our mouth with popping candies, fizzling and sizzling. What we enjoy is the pain. Thank you for the meals.
Now, we are ready to go.
